Though it's unclear who originated the cat/cucumber trend, there are now tons of videos of owners placing cucumbers behind their unsuspecting feline friends. When the cats turn around, they all freak the eff out - and some even jump several feet back. People are so amused by this phenomenon that it even has its own page on Reddit, at /r/CucumbersScaringCats. What is it about cucumbers that turn these pets into scaredy cats? But before you start thinking that these cats just hate their vegetables, animal specialist Dr. Roger Mugford insists that it has nothing to do with cucumbers - just with their shape. According to Dr. Mugford's interview with The Telegraph, cats are naturally "suspicious of the unknown" because it could pose a threat to them. He suspects that the same thing might happen with any other similar object, even something of a different shape.
So there you have it: cats aren't afraid of cucumbers, they just don't like it when their owners place random objects behind them without warning. These videos may be funny to watch, but maybe don't torment your poor cat: no feline wants to be perpetually freaked out.
