How to Perfectly Transition Your Fave Fall Pieces Into Winter

We're starting to feel that frost in the air, and we all know what means: Goodbye fall fashion and hello winter gear. But don't throw all of your fall faves into storage just yet. There are plenty of things you were rocking this season that can transition with you to winter and help you save some cash for later. (Mid-winter tropical cruise, anyone?)

Winter is all about layering up and the more pieces you have on, the better. Add your fall knit dress or that poncho you'd been saving up for to the look with some super cozy, warm pieces, and it'll be smooth cruising between the seasons. Here's how you do it.

Knit Dress

Your adorable knit dress like this one ($37, Zappos) doesn't have to stay in your closet until the leaves fall again. Instead, wear it with wool tights ($19, Asos) and a pair of leg warmers ($24, Nordstrom) to go over them. For even more warmth, take your favorite cardi or a fuzzy, pull-over sweater like this ($35, Style Moi) and place it on top for the sweater-skirt look that's in for both seasons. Finish it off with a beanie ($29, Accessorize) and you've moved from fall fab to winter wonderland.

Quarter Sleeve V-Neck Top

That striped, quarter-sleeve V-neck ($26, Black Five) was perfect for days when the weather couldn't decide between warm and chilly, which is why it's also perfect for now. A heavy wool blazer or that token cardi like this gorg mustard colored one ($22, She Inside) can go right over your crew to add some prep to your style. Add a thicker pair of jeans or some corduroy pants ($50, Hollister Co) (they're so in, even if your grandma has a pair) and some cute brown booties ($38, Lulus), so you're toasty on top and bottom.

Felt Hat

Um, winter is perfect for hats, so why are you putting this one away? Not much you need to switch up here because felt is a warm material that can be busted out on brisker days, too. We're not saying wear this in a full-fledged snowstorm, but don't be afraid to tote your felt hat around in the middle of December. Try your felt hat ($36, Lucky Brand) with a pair of white jeans ($40, River Island) and your biggest, fluffiest sweater ($23, Style Moi). Finish it with an infinity scarf ($13, Forever 21) and boom, your felt hat is winter ready!

Knee Socks

Knee socks ($11, Luxury Diva) were a fall staple for all of your boho-chic dresses, but they can serve another purpose come the winter. Put on those pair of wool tights we were talking about earlier and take your knee socks (preferably a different color but one that complements the tights) and put them over for another level of warmth. You can even wear your knee socks over your dark jeans ($38, John Lewis) and under your favorite knee-high boots ($46, Charlotte Russe) to keep your calves extra comfy. Complete the chilled out look with a warm plaid button down.

Our friend the poncho made a big comeback this fall and we're not really ready to give it up. Luckily, we don't have to. Take your tribal print poncho like this one ($40, Only) and place it over a simple, cream turtleneck ($13.50, Amazon). If you have a more simple poncho try it out over your favorite plaid button down. Put on your warmest pair of dark jeans ($30, New Look) (with those knee socks [$11, Luxury Diva], of course) and black booties ($43, Old Navy) and you got one more layer that won't exhaust your go-to cardi.
