Charlie Sheen will reportedly sit down for an interview on Today this week and reveal news that made our jaws drop.
According to TMZ, the actor is HIV positive and heading to the show Tuesday morning to discuss it. He supposedly has known about his status for more than a year, but kept it a secret for the most part. That changed when he "confided in several friends" he thought he could trust, but who spread the word that he is HIV positive instead.
That caused several of his former partners to threaten lawsuits against him considering they were unaware of his status and had sexual "interactions" with him. Charlie was reportedly able to settle several of those cases in return for money and confidentiality agreements.
Hollywood publicist and crisis manager Howard Bragman told People he was approached six months ago by people close to Sheen to deal with the crisis, but never took it on. "The interview could open up a lot of sympathy for him, but he has to be concerned about a fear of litigation from former sexual partners. You don't take that lightly."
Howard said he was told that Charlie is "getting treatment, and a lot of people in his life know about it." He added, "It's been going on for quite awhile. He's not necessarily comfortable talking about it. It was very hard to get up the courage for him to talk about it."
"I've known about this a long time, it's not a surprise to me," he continued. "I feel very sorry for his pain. And I hope it's used as a teachable moment for the world. This is a disease that can affect anyone."
Even in spite of Charlie's behavior in recent years, this is still beyond shocking. Hopefully, this will be an eye opener not only for his fans but for people everywhere that regardless of who you are, you can still contract HIV if you are not taking the necessary precautions.
