Leave it to Jimmy Kimmel to help the One Direction guys fill the vacancy left after Zayn Malik quit the group earlier this year.

Jimmy's perfect replacement for Zayn? A potato. Um...you calling Zayn a potato, Jimmy?

Jimmy set things up by announcing: "We have some very exciting news for One Direction fans tonight. We are going to do something no band has ever done before, no band has ever had before. We are going to welcome a new member to the One Direction family."

He described the potato as "ordinary" and "humble," explaining, "what this potato does not know is, it is about to become the most famous potato in the world. Members of the paparazzi will try to take pictures of it. Young girls will shriek when they see it. By this time tomorrow, this potato...might even be dating Ariana Grande."

The potato was an instant hit with the One Direction guys...and they accepted it as the official One Direction potato!

The 1D potato quickly took to social media to share just how well things were going, posting pics of hangs with Jimmy as well as Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone. And the little veggie got a massive following on Twitter and Instagram!

The spud captioned one pic: "My whole life potatoes have been laughing at me, telling me I would never drum for @OneDirection. Live your dreams kids! Who's laughing now?"

All in a day's work for the more famous potato in the world.
