I can't be the only one whose heart shattered into a billion pieces when I learned that TeenNick had cancelled Degrassi, right? Fortunately for fans, we won't be saying goodbye to Degrassi Community School: Netflix has picked up the Canadian teen soap, and the show that taught us everything there is to know about being a teenager will be able to do so for another generation of kids. The Netflix iteration is called Degrassi: Next Class, and it just released a trailer. Be prepared to feel all of the feels.
Degrassi was never short of drama, but the Netflix version looks like it's cranking the drama up to an all-time high. The new trailer, which was released by Entertainment Weekly, reveals that Grace is suffering from a potentially life-threatening illness, Maya and Zig may be breaking up over her music career, and Miles isn't dealing well with his rough home situation. Of course, it's not all depressing: Shay's biggest concern seems to be whether her crush will notice that her "junk in the trunk" isn't exactly natural. (You know, normal teen stuff.)
In addition to our already beloved characters, Degrassi: Next Class will be introducing us to a new crop of kids, including feminist Goldi, fame-seeking Vijay, and young entrepreneur Baaz. In addition to having the characters come from all walks of life and have wildly different aspirations, the newest cast members are also a culturally diverse bunch - something we definitely need more of on television.
I'm beyond thrilled that Degrassi is getting another chance at being the realest teen drama on TV with its latest incarnation, and yes, I will be binge-watching it when episodes start streaming on Jan. 15. Check out the trailer below:
