Where Are They Now: The Cast of Hairspray

One of my all-time favorite directors is John Waters. Here's why: he was making disturbing and hilarious movies about self-loving, cross-dressing women obsessed with liquid eyeliner and cha-cha heels back in the 1970s. He made Divine a household word (at least, we like to think so). He showed us a quirky and often unsavory side of Baltimore with cult classic films such as Female Trouble and Pink Flamingos, and he was not afraid to have plus size women as his leading roles, which to this day is a rarity. Basically what I'm saying here is that I want John Waters to be my best friend. Since I'm not that cool, or live anywhere near Baltimore, I just have to settle for watching his movies and reading his books. And, of course, dancing/bopping around shamelessly to every song on Hairspray.

While Waters filmed the original version of film in 1988, Hairspray has become a household word; in 2002 it was adapted for the stage as a musical, and then remade as a feature film in 2007. Clearly, the story of a spunky teenage girl in 1960s Baltimore trying to eradicate racial segregation on a TV dance show is a timeless story that we'll be enjoying for years to come. But what has become of the original cast members? Obviously, some of them have just been busy being really famous (ahem, Christopher Walken, John Travolta, Zac Efron, Debbie Harry we're looking at you), but we have answers for a few of the folks that we don't see or hear almost immediately when we turn on our TV or radio.
