Decorating is a LOT harder than it looks.
That's what sisters Emily Montoyed and Lee Mayer learned when they attempted to decorate their first homes with a limited budget and no formal training in interior design. That idea prompted them to launch their own company called Havenly, an online design firm that connects people strapped for cash (like us!) with affordable experts. Rates start as low as $79 and your session starts with an online style quiz to figure out your aesthetic. What's not to love?
Knowing that a dorm needs just as much love and care as any other room, Emily and Lee offered to share some decorating hacks to create a space that your squad will be begging to hang out in.
Let's Shag, Baby
Place a layered rug on top of wall-to-wall carpet to create a luxurious foundation for the room.
Hang curtains! It is one of the best methods for giving the illusion of height in a cramped space.
Strategically-placed ambient lighting. It helps to create warmth and eliminates the need to ever turn on the fluorescent lights.
Choose a Centerpiece
Place a textile-covered jewelry board behind an elegant desk. It opens up the limited desk space and allows it to do double-duty as a functional yet decorative element to your room.
Wood You Rather
Incorporate wooden artwork above the bed helps to bring texture, warmth and vibrance to a previously flat space. Use wall mounting tape to ensure you don't leave behind any holes in the walls.
