There's something about the holidays that makes you want to don an après ski-inspired wardrobe, and there's no more appropriate pattern than festive Fair Isle.
You'd recognize the graphic knitting pattern in a blink of an eye, lending any sweater it touches a little holiday cheer. Authentic Fair Isle knits are made on a tiny island of the same name in Scotland, but they are replicated by almost every fast fashion brand out there.
Even luxury brands want a piece of Fair Isle: You might recall the Chanel controversy in which Fair Isle designer Mati Ventrillon accused the fashion house of stealing her designs. Soon after, Chanel credited Mati on all communications about the products with the design in question. Yikes.
Needless to say, it's hard to image that Fair Isle will ever go out of style. Even though the pattern is a classic, some of our favorite iterations are the ones that take a modern spin on the traditional knits. From oversized, abstract interpretations to cheeky reindeer prints, these are some of the Fair Isle pieces we're crushing on RN.
Urban Outfitters for pairing its Fair Isle with a black velvet midi skirt and chunky boots in the shot above. We find the key to pulling off the pattern is to tone down the rest of the look and amp up the texture. Since Fair Isle can hold its own with in-your-face graphics and bold colors, look for interesting contrasts like leather, suede and denim to keep your knits feeling fresh.
