The Olympic gold medal for best GIF at Rio 2016 must surely go to Chris Nik.

His manipulated clip of two Chinese divers plunging into plastic cups is going viral, garnering almost 10 million views on Imgur in just two days.

The 8-second GIF begins normally enough, showing Chen Aisen and Lin Yue leaping from the 10-meter board during their gold medal-winning synchronized dive on Monday.

But as they're about to hit the pool water, they swoop into the beakers instead.

"I first thought of the idea when I saw them jumping so perfectly," Nik, from Atlanta in Georgia, told the BBC. "So I challenged myself to see if I could do just that."

Nik's outstanding effort has won him legions of fans, and even caught the attention of British rock band Coldplay.

The gif follows #PhelpsFace as one of the viral sensations of the Games.
