  One Direction is a British-Irish boy band that first came together on the United Kingdom version of the television show The X Factor. The group consists of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. At first, all five guys applied as solo candidates to The X Factor competition, but failed to qualify for the solo "Boys" category. That's when guest judge Nicole Scherzinger suggested that the boys form a band, thus qualifying them for the "Group" category. 
   
  One Direction finished third overall on the seventh season of the reality competition show. Their first single, "What Makes You Beautiful," broke Sony Music pre-order sale records in the UK, selling 153,000 copies within it's first week of release.
