Yesterday, I had the awesome opportunity to do a phone interview with Austin Butler. You might recognize Austin from roles in "Ruby & the Rockits," Aliens in the Attic, or even his guest roles on "JONAS L.A." and "Wizards of Waverly Place."
He is currently recurring on the CW's "Life Unexpected" as jock "Jones" who has feelings for Lux (Britt Robertson). I had the chance to talk with him about the show, which you can watch tonight at 9pm EST on the CW.
Lisa: What's your favorite thing about playing Jones on "Life Unexpected"?
Austin: I think it's cool that he's the popular quarterback in high school kid because I never went to high school. So, I never had a locker, I never knew what it was like, so I might have been the geeky kid in school or something like that. It's cool for me to be able to portray this popular guy on TV because it's something that I never really go to do.
L: Were you excited when you got the call that they were bringing you back for more episodes in season 2?
A: Yeah, totally. The writing is so great and I knew that this season was going to be even crazier as far as the twists and the story lines intertwining and everything. I was really excited when they called me back.
L: Can you give us any hints on what to expect between Lux (Britt Robertson) and Jones now that Bug is out of the picture?
A: There's a lot happening. The way I'm feeling, Jones and Lux belong together but there's a lot about Lux that keeps that from happening. He's patient and understanding but he also doesn't want to be a chump in the situation. So, we'll kind of see what happens. I don't even know myself what all happens as far as them getting close or anything.
L: The show is one of my favorites, but it's on the bubble to be renewed or cancelled. What would you say to people for why they should watch the show or why it should be continued, because it really is a good family show.
A: I'm glad to hear you say that. I agree with you. I think that the fact that it is a family show and it's exploring this new family and this season it's more of being a family rather than getting to know your family. Now they're sort of "sitting in it" and having to really deal with "this is Lux's mom" and it's not like just meeting her mom. But then there's all these CW twists that are thrown in there like crazy relationships and other characters, so this season more than last, there's a lot of things going on that are twisting the show around. It keeps you guessing all the time. I think it's a really fun and interesting show to watch. On top of that, you can still get chills watching it. I'll get chills watching episodes that I'm not in.
L: Do you have a favorite storyline or episode so far?
A: As far as the episodes I've seen this season, [tonight's] episode, I think is Liz the creator's favorite episode. I watched it and it's really good. I'm not in it but it's really good. Lux is playing basketball and it's just a really good episode.
Hmm…for some reason I highly doubt Austin would have been a geek in high school. I got even more scoop from Austin about his role in "Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure," music and more. Stay tuned for part 2.
