Paranormal Activity 2 is scaring up a treat in the U.S. in the run-up to Halloween – it has broken box office records by scoring the biggest three-day opening for a horror film, grossing $41.5 million.
The thrilling sequel debuted at number one, stealing the title from Friday the 13th, which earned $40.6 million when it opened last year.
The success of the documentary-style Paranormal Activity 2 bumps outrageous stunt movie Jackass 3D into second place with $21.6 million. Its 10-day total now stands at $87.1 million.
Bruce Willis' action release Red is at three ($15 million), while Matt Damon's supernatural film Hereafter, directed by Clint Eastwood, enters the countdown at four with $12 million. The Social Network rounds out the top five in fifth place.
