While there are a lot of parties that lead up to music's biggest night, none of them have the kind of jam session that takes place at The Roots annual party. Artists as varied as Asher Roth, Chaka Khan and Sara Bareilles showed up to this years and The Roots were the funky glue that held it all together as usual.
Considering how the popularity of The Roots has grown since becoming the house band for Jimmy Fallon's late night show, the event had to be moved from The Key Club in West Hollywood to a bigger venue called the The Music Box on the east side of Hollywood. Even with the new venue the place was packed from front to back with music lovers of all types including Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon who sat at a booth right by the stage completely transfixed by the talent gracing the stage.
While Drake and Young Money's party was happening only a few miles away at The Lot, something decidedly different was on stage at this Roots Jam. By the time the legendary Dougie Fresh closed out the night the crowd had already seen Grammy nominated artists like Melanie Fiona and Raheem Devaughn sing with so much soul that it felt a bit like church!
When Will I Am from the Black Eyed Peas got on stage unannounced and just got on the keyboard while Dougie Fresh took everyone back to the old school with his classic beat boxing mixed with call and response rhymes it definitely felt like one of those moments that Grammy is all about.
