Thor has struck gold at the U.S. box office, hammering the competition with an opening weekend haul of $66 million.

The 3D comic book adaptation, directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Chris Hemsworth as the Nordic God of Thunder, debuts at number one in the box office chart, forcing Fast Five into second place with $32.5 million.

New romantic comedies Jumping the Broom and Something Borrowed trail behind in third and fourth place, respectively, while animated movie Rio rounds out the top five.
