"Gossip Girl" star Penn Badgley has seen off competition from Robert Pattinson to land the coveted role of Jeff Buckley in a new biopic, according to a U.S. report.
Movie bosses are planning to bring the tragic star's story to the big screen in a new film and the Twilight actor spoke publicly about his desire to tackle the lead role.
Pattinson even met with the late singer's mother Mary Guibert, who is the currently-untitled movie's executive producer, with a view to taking on the part, but the role has now been handed to Badgley instead, according to Hollywoodlife.com.
A source tells the website, "It was down to Rob (Pattinson), James Franco and Penn (Badgley) for the part… Penn is thrilled to get this role and thinks it's the film of a lifetime."
Buckley's music career was cut short when he drowned in a Memphis, Tennessee river in 1997 at the age of 30.
